It is so hard to hear of the passing of someone you've held special in your heart. The death of one of our Pueblo Family is very difficult. However, the Lord can sustain all of us in our grief.

Steven, I'm sorry I never got to meet you, but feel that's my loss. I've been friends with Mike Liles for years, and can tell how close his friendship was with you. As a crusty ole Navy Chief, I feel like we were brothers in arms, even though I never had to serve under captivity. For that, you have my sincere respect, admiration as a hero, and endless gratitude. Rest in Peace Brother Shipmate, you did your share and some other's too...God Bless. Because of men like you, we have a free Nation today. We are forever in your debt. My most sincere condolences to your family and friends. Chuck Williams AMSC U.S. Navy(r)

Steve, I'm glad we were able to spend a little time together just one more time a couple of weeks ago. We had a good laugh about when we met up in San Diego back in '67 and you said you would be home, back in Tampa, before I. We were on different ships, I was on the USS Estes at the time and you were on the Publeo. My ship went on to Nam and yours sailed into history.....Thanks again for the memories. You were a great friend and a true hero for all you endured during your captivity, for your friends, family and country. I want you to know that I just finished reading "The Last Voyage of USS Pueblo" again this past week. Mike Liles had sent me the book about 3 weeks ago and wanted me to see you to have you autograph it. You won't believe this, but it was Tuesday evening, July 29th that I finished the book and had a short conversation with Cherolyn about the story. I'm sorry I never got back with you again before your passing. When I saw you last you did look good and seemed very upbeat and hopeful. When you talked of getting married, I was kind of hoping for an invitation.....we're all going to miss you and be it heaven for you at least you won't be seeing any of those nasty Korean guards again. If it's the other way for you, I hope you get a chance to kick some of their butts. For sure, they'll all be there.... Rest in peace my friend and goodbye.

Steve will be missed. We spent many a Sunday being upset - and sometimes elated - at the antics of our favorite Buccaneers. Goodbye dear friend.

I had the pleasure of being in a group with Steve at the St Pete Vet Center for a number of years. He and I shared an interest in race cars and a bond that exists between combat veterans. He was always willing and eager to extend help and encouragement to his fellow vets and his comments were always sound. He was particularly proud of the work he did as a Guardian Ad Litem and justly so. He will be missed by those who were privileged to know him. Rest well my friend.
