Obituary of Capt. Ronald M. Gomer USN (Ret.)

It is with the deepest sadness that our family announces, the passing of Ronald Morris Gomer, Capt. US Navy (Ret) ;beloved husband, father & grandfather.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 03/10/1933, he passed away in Saint Petersburg, Florida on 12/23/2023.

We had to say our last goodbyes to him as he passed peacefully. He was surrounded lovingly by his closest, immediate surviving family members: his wife Elaine "Angel" Gomer of 66 years of marriage, son Glenn Gomer (Barbara), his beloved granddaughters: Marlo Rose Gomer & Natalie Elise Gomer, his daughter Suzette Fulton (Federico).

His military career spanned over 34 years as a Dentist in the US Navy, & as a Diplomate in Periodontics. During his military career in addition to his many duty stations, he was aboard US Naval ships: USS Frontier AD-25 & most notably the USS Enterprise CVN-65; the 1st nuclear powered aircraft carrier , nicknamed "The Big E",  as it is still the longest Naval vessel ever built to this date.  He also volunteered for the US Coastguard as a vessel inspector for safety. In addition, having volunteered many years at MacDill AirForce Base Hospital. His career enriched our lives as a military family in so many ways, taking us to various points across the United States & overseas; most notably when we were stationed in Rota, Spain. Spain became like a second home for us & remained in his (and all of our) hearts. He and our family made many lifelong friendships there & other duty stations. Our family has great pride and gratitude for his service to our country; showing us so many places, people & cultures in this beautiful world!

He was 90 "years young"! Having lived a very healthy, active lifestyle (including: running given the nicknames "gum runner" & "Topgum" ) He did so alongside his beautiful bride ( Elaine Angel Gomer; whom he was always proud to have lovingly by his side as his life partner for over 66 years!! He always called her "beautiful" or "my talented wife" , referring to her being an accomplished artist & having a doctorate in nutrition; always making sure they both ate a healthy Mediterranean diet, and/or maintaining an active lifestyle together. They both ran 10ks, marathons, biked, played tennis, kayaked, enjoyed traveling, camping and of course boating!

He was the best husband, father, grandfather and friend to many!! Anyone who knew him, knew he was a lover of dogs. He was also very philanthropic, charitable & volunteered for many years in many capacities; especially at MacDill AirForce Base Hospital; for which he received many awards over the years!

He was a wonderful human!! His was a life well-lived & full of love!! His presence here is most certainly missed; though we know he is now watching lovingly over us all!!  He will always remain in all of our hearts!!! Our love as a family is something that will last beyond time or place!! May he rest in the wings of angels our dear, sweet, wonderful patriarch!!! Fair winds & following seas!!
