Obituary of Elmer L. Dunnegan

Elmer Lee Dunnegan, 84, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away on Friday, June 4th, 2021 at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, 6315 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, FL 33710. Pastor Larry Shutske will be officiating. A luncheon will follow the service and will be held in Heritage Hall, which adjoins the church.  In the weeks following, an additional private ceremony will be held in St. Louis, MO at the home where Elmer lived with his wife and raised his children for over 50 years. The family will spread Elmer’s ashes and plant a memorial tree in his honor.

Elmer was born April 5, 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri to Elmer and Nedra (Kirkpatrick) Dunnegan. On November 1, 1958 he married his beloved wife, Dorothy (Rose), to whom he remained married for over 62 years. Elmer met Dorothy at the St. Louis Corporate offices of AAA Auto Club of Missouri where they both worked, and where Elmer continued to work until he retired after 43 years of service.  Elmer was a history buff and avid reader who enjoyed Stephen King novels and watching movies and TV shows.

Elmer is survived by his wife Dorothy, his son, Michael Edward Dunnegan (St. Louis, MO); his daughter, Susan Marie Haertling and her husband Jeff Haertling (St. Petersburg, FL); and by his three grandchildren; Alex, Alayna and Josie.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer (1992) and Nedra (1998).

The care of Mr. Dunnegan and his family has been entrusted to David C. Gross Funeral Home in St. Petersburg.
