Obituary of Carol M. Piper

Piper- Carol M. 62 of St. Petersburg passed away Thursday April 7, 2005 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston Texas following complications from a bone marrow transplant. Born in Philadelphia Pa, she was a graduate of Miami Senior High School and the University of Florida College of Education. She came here in 1965 from Gainesville Florida. An elementary school teacher in Pinellas County for the past 40 years, she helped integrate Pinellas schools, when in 1966, she became the third white teacher in a then all black Ridgecrest Elementary School. She taught second grade for many years at Madeira Beach Elementary School, retiring in 2002 due to illness. She was a member of Congregation B'nai Israel of St. Petersburg, and was a member and past president of its sisterhood. Survivors include her husband of 40 years Julian; a son Dr. David Piper and two daughters Stephanie Kohan and Diane Piper all of St. Petersburg; her mother Rose Segal Castle of St. Petersburg; two sisters Sharon Beck of Miami and Barbara Friedel of St. Petersburg; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. David C. Gross Funeral Homes, Beth David Chapel, St. Petersburg, is in charge of arrangements. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, April 8, 2005 at 3PM at Chapel Hill Memorial Park on Ulmerton Road (1/4 mile east of Starkey) with Rabbi Jacob Luski and Cantor David Sislen officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in her memory be made to the Carol Segal Piper Scholarship Fund at the Pinellas County Jewish Day School, 1775 Highland Avenue, Clearwater FL 33756.
