Obituary of Melvin Weinman

WEINMAN - Melvin, age 87, of St. Petersburg and formerly of Treasure Island, passed away Saturday, September 24, 2005 at the Toby Weinman Assisted Living Facility in St. Petersburg. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he became a regular visitor to Treasure Island in the late 1950's and bought his winter home in Treasure Island in the early 1970's. He became a full time resident in the mid 1990's and later moved to the St. Petersburg assisted living facility that was named after his late wife, Toby. He was in the US Navy, having served in WW II. He was an attorney and was a member of the Maryland Bar Association. He was a real estate investor, developer and retailer and attended Temple Beth-El. Following his retirement, he became a general aviation pilot and at the age of 61 he began almost full time study to become an instrument rated pilot, which he achieved in one year. This was an accomplishment that he said was more challenging than taking the Bar exam. He was a member of AOPA. (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) He loved to travel; he and Toby traveled all over the world and had an apartment in Italy that they visited often. He enjoyed collecting art, both paintings and sculpture, and was a benefactor of the Temple Beth-El art show. He was active in philanthropy, including participation in improvements to the Emergency and Radiation Departments at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore; work with the Jewish Hospice program of Baltimore, Hospice of the Florida Suncoast and construction of the Toby Weinman Assisted Living Facility in St. Petersburg. Survivors include two sons; Dr. Jonathan of Stevenson, Maryland and Morris "Chip" of Baltimore and five grandchildren. Services will be 10:45 am today (Monday) at the David C. Gross Beth David Chapel with Rabbi Gabriel Ben-Or officiating. Additional services will take place Wednesday in Baltimore. Interment will follow in Beth-El Cemetery in Randalstown, Maryland. Mr. Weinman was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Toby. David C. Gross Funeral Homes, Beth David Chapel, St. Petersburg is serving the family.
