Daniel Morris, MD (colleague, friend, student, was mentored by him.) posted a condolence

I was in Tampa from 1981 to 1991 as an intern, resident, heme-onc fellow and faculty member at USF. I had a continuous and at the risk of sounding immodest close relationship with this fine gentleman, leader, teacher, and mentor. I have fond memories of his teaching and friendship. I wanted to see him again this year though I had heard that he was in a nursing home and not sure if he could receive me, and since have learned of his death. I also knew and would like to recognize in this message his wife (I worked at Moffitt) who preceded him in death. I have met his son Don and daughter Elise, and extend my condolences to them, though they may not remember me. I have some nice pictures of Dr. Behnke that I took when I was in Tampa that give me fond rememberences when I look at these pictures. I also have some favorite Behnke stories that would be too much to put in this narrative. One is that he would tell medical students that taking care of patients was supposed to be fun. It was with Dr. Behnke.

Dr.Behnke was a friend, colleague and mentor of my father-in-law, Jack Cullison in Indiana and my husband, Jim Cullison at USF. Though Jim died in 1994 & Jack in 2003, they often shared their memories of Dr. Behnke's dedication & compassion, as well as his profound ability to diagnose a patient without technology, the old fashioned way, by a thorough physical exam. Dr. Behnke embodied the Internal Medicine program at USF. He lives on in the hearts of all of the internists that he trained, especially the ones from Indiana. May God bless the Behnke family.

We will always remember you as a true gentleman and a scholar. You were a great mentor to me and literally thousands of other physicians teaching us not only how to care for patients but also how to care for people. We will miss you as a colleague, a mentor, a friend and a true inspiration on how to make this world a better place for all.

So sorry to learn of your loss. Dr.& Mrs. Behnke were two of our favorites at Cafe Don Jose when we owned it and Dr. Robert Walker, one of Dr. Behnke's former students took wonderful care of my mother for several years. They were two very special people and helped make the world a better place!
