First, in the 80s, Dr. P was the surgeon who saved my life when I was a teenager. Then he was a father figure and mentor who taught me about life and medicine. He encouraged me to "learn how to learn", was the reason I fell in love with medicine. I worked for him before PA school so I could get some medical experience in and be able to apply to PA school. I did my surgical rotation with him. He led by example on how to have the most compassionate and loving bed side manner that truly compares to none regardless of how exhausted he was.. He was of course, my friend, a prankster and loyal Dook fan even when I rooted against them. The greatest gift of all was when he became "Poppy" to my children. He loved my family and we sure loved him. I wish I had more pictures of him but the most precious to me I will share. He loved people so well, I hope he knows how well he was loved. Poppy changed the course of my life when I was a teenager and he affected it for the good pretty much every day thereafter. He meant so much to me and over the last 36 years never stopped being a vital part of my life regardless of the distance between us. We weren't blood related but he was family to us all the same. We will miss Poppy so much but the bond isn't broken by his passing, it was just too strong for that. - Kelly (Stambaugh) Hyde and family
