Barb and I were best buds for our very early years and our crazy teen-age years. We had great fun and many laughs and also some tears. So sorry to hear of her passing. My condolences to her wonderful family and she is now in my heart and my prayers

I am heart broken to have heard of Barbara's passing. She was such a kind and generous woman who genuinely loved life. She was always so cheerful. In life we seldom meet truly sincere people such as her. She will be greatly missed and was greatly loved. I'm sure she's somewhere in the after life yelling "BINGO"
Friends in life and death,

Barbara may have been my friend Theresa’s mom, but I would have chosen her as friend regardless. She was a great story teller, a wonderful role model, and one of the best Grandmas that ever lived (even to kids that were her grandkids’ friends!). So glad that we lived in Earth at the same time and that we were blessed by her presence. Sending love and peace to her whole family. Xo

I am late to everything but never when going to the airport and that is because of Barb!
16 years ago, Barb, Theresa, Ava (who was 1 then), and I were flying back home after a long wild weekend at Vegas. We scored 1st Class Ticket upgrades on the trip back home! At the airport, waiting for our plane at the gate, we had some time to kill before boarding. Theresa was pushing Ava around to make her sleep before boarding. I was on a conference call for work in one corner of our gate. In the middle of the conference call, I see Barb in the corner of my eye, waving at me, I waved back at her as I was talking. She was mouthing something to me and I smiled and waved to her. She had her big red Dooneyburk leather purse bulging with coins around her shoulder. 30 minutes later I ended my call walked back to the gate, I see Theresa flailing her arms mad as hell! Theresa barks at me, “Where is my mom?” I replied, “She should be here at the gate.”
The plane was boarding as scheduled and Barb is missing. The gate agent said the plane leaves with or without Barb. She gets on the microphone to page “Barbara Volpe please go to your gate now.”— Barb is a no show. The plane with our 1st Class tickets left without us.Theresa is livid. She turns to me and say, “i will never forgive you since you lost my mom.” — I shrug my shoulders, perplexed, and respond “What did I do?”
A half hour pass, Barb is still no where to be found. Now we are worried. Theresa and I furiously run around close to the gate going to the shops (she lives to shop), going to the restaurants (she might be looking for a Coke), and looking at all corners, then lo-and-behold we turn the corner where we can hear bells, there is Barb shuffling around with her red bag full of quarters and money in her hands putting coins in a slot machine at the airport. As usual she is winning. We missed our flight because Barb was busy winning in the dollar slots and with her hearing aid off, she did not hear the agent paging her name! — Theresa re-booked our flights but could only get one 1st Class seat for her and Ava. Theresa with her simmering Volpe temper turned to me and Barb with dagger eyes and said “You two are not sitting with me. You are both in the back row.”
Barb and I always getting into trouble with Theresa. Barb just blows it off like nothing and smirks.
From that moment on, I am freakishly obsessed with making sure I am on time going to the airport to the point that it’s an inside family joke, because I’m late to everything else!

Where to begin? Barb was such a huge influence on who I’ve become today. She was my safe house in high school where I knew I could walk in the door and she’d make me a pot of coffee. She was my high school mom. Barb taught me that family really does indeed revolve around food. The first year I ever actually enjoyed Christmas was the first Christmas Eve ever spent on Hickory Street in The Heights. Food covered the entire oil clothed table (there was always a fresh oil cloth tablecloth on the kitchen table) and family was everywhere! No matter how tired she was she would get up and make you a plate. This is the tradition I have carried on to my family. All 6 grandchildren know that Christmas Eve is celebrated together at our house thanks to this wonderful woman. When Barb was in Crete I made sure I brought the grandkids to see her every year just so they knew who this beautiful caregiver was. It was important to me that she touched their lives too.
During the year you knew to be home at 6:00pm for dinner. If we couldn’t make it right on time there was a plate waiting. The family conversations around the table were the best. Lots of laughing, tall tales, far fetched life coaching from Johnny and Barb shaking her head while we all laughed. I want the entire Volpe family to know that no matter what happens from now on, now that mom is gone, to make the time to sit at the table with each other and laugh. This would honor her the most. This is how you keep the family together. Laugh at your differences when you’re sitting at the table together. When the laughter dies down and you all glance at each other, remember Barb in the chair by the sink shaking her head. You’re some of the luckiest, most loved kids I know.

My favorite memory with my grandma was whenever we would go down to florida, she would always make the best food. I loved her meatballs, her gnocchis, and all the amazing foods she would make

I met Barb in 1985 and she immediately made me sit down and eat. This was repeated nearly every time I saw her, it was fantastic. In fact, I remember very clearly fainting at the house in Crete, the first thing she said when I came to was “have you eaten?” She was always a caretaker, always lovely and kind, and she just had the best sense of humor (I tested it many times). Some of my favorite memories were talking about books we’d both read, she read more than me and definitely faster - I’ll cherish those conversations (we both loved Didion’s Year of Magical Thinking). A rare soul filled with passion, love, and kindness (and Italian revenge if you did her family wrong). Rest In Peace, Barb. My heart goes out to Theresa, Vince, John, and the grandchildren and extended family who all loved her so very much. ❤️

My fondest memory of my Aunt Barbara was when I was a little kid. She always had a piece of candy in her purse and was generous to share. Her favorites were rootbeer barrels and coffee Nips. I wasn't a fan of the rootbeer barrels, but I liked the Nips and still do to this day. I asked her not to long ago at a family outing in May, "Auntie Barbara, remember when you use to like those coffee Nips?" She told me they weren't her favorite, but she knew I liked them and would always have a few in her purse for me. She was a wonderful Aunt and Great Aunt to our kids. We will miss her laugh, her thoughtful nature, and her love of Rod Stewart.
