I knew Jim when he worked for the Tampa Tribune in New Port Richey in the 1970s. He was a great friend and I was very happy that he and Karen got married and have had a good life together. I have often thought about him over the years and am so sorry that he has passed away. He was a very good, kind person and I am glad to have had the privilege of knowing him. My codolences to Karen, his children, grandchildren and the rest of his family and friends.

TRIBUTE TO
James A. Dawkins
“Buddy”, as most of your classmates called you during those years (’55-61) we were in Osceola High, I am in still disbelief that you have been taken from us. If I could have just an hour with you, it would be one that I would cherish. Since our paths have crossed many times, and I am now living many miles from your home there in Florida, perhaps a few moments of shared memories will give your family some assurance you have left indelible prints in the Florida sand for your family, Tampa Bay communities, and your Jewish friends.
Probably the most memorable days were those when you were mastering the German language, and what a joy you were to your classmates and teachers! Only the most brilliant students could have touched those difficult conjugations. I bet much of your memory work was done while you were marching with the Kowboy band!
Remember those days when we both struggled with being unskilled in the physical education classes of Coach Stevens and were put in a small group to do exercises to cut the “gut” ? I see that you even volunteered for your son’s soccer team to handle the coaching, when you never played the sport as a kid yourself!
Your life as a perfectionist both in the classroom, as a drum major leading our Kowboy band, working with the school yearbook staff in cramped and antiquated quarters, all without a grumble left a deep impression on all your teachers and classmates. Those were preparation years for your leadership in journalism and your Jewish faith.
The loss of both your Dad, and then your Mom, made days challenging as you pursued your undergraduate college education at Morehead SU then the master’s at
USF. Your determination assured your success as a self-taught journalist, with numerous State and Regional awards.
Thank you for being a friend that never brought attention to yourself but rather pursued the routes of making Kissimmee and your family heritage a legacy for others to follow.

When my family and I moved to Kissimmee, Florida, nearly 70 years ago, Jim ("Buddy" as I knew him) very quickly became my very best and closest friend in Elementary School. Without wavering this friendship continued throughout Junior High, High School, College, and on through life itself.
Though our lives' paths did often diverge, we always stayed in touch . Though we had not seen each other for the past several years, yet we spoke often by phone. I will miss those conversations!
As teenagers together we shared our youthful dreams and aspirations for the future. As young men we even shared a dormitory room at Morehead State University; we shared an apartment in St Helen's, Oregon, while seeking employment; we traveled to Israel, Egypt, and the Soviet Union in the early 70's and the list goes on.
Buddy always excelled at his goals, and was absolutely honest and stellar in his endeavors. From school days on, though the same age, Buddy was actually a role model to me as well as the best friend one could ever hope to have.... always there with words of encouragement and wisdom. How I will miss those words.
Buddy has now returned to the Creator. May my dear old friend be now and forever at Peace in His hands. My sincerest and most heartfelt feelings of love and sympathy go to Karen and family.
Love and as Buddy and I always said "Ce la Vie"

I'm so sorry for your loss. The time we did meet him was a pleasure. To be his 1st " Uber" ride will be a highlight for Terrell and I. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
