Obituary of Gerald Cohen, M.D.

 

Gerald Cohen, MD passed away June 29, 2021 at the age of 91.  He was born in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Chicago, IL.  A US Army veteran, he was a graduate of the University of Illinois and received his MD degree from Chicago Medical School.  In 1981, he moved to St. Petersburg, FL and became chief psychiatrist in the PTSD unit of Bay Pines VA hospital, a position in which he helped many Vietnam War veterans.  An avid tennis player, he was a great fan of jazz music and Frank Sinatra.

He is survived by his wife of many years, Marcia Cohen, their two children, Julie Troum (Mark), and Victor Cohen (Lisa), their three grandchildren, David Troum (Kortney), Jenna Born (Rob) and Joshua Cohen, and their great-grandson, Maxwell Troum, as well as his brother, Paul Cohen (Andrea) of Bayside, NY.

A graveside service will be held 10 am Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Chapel Hill Memorial Park, 12905 Wild Acres Road, Largo, FL. 33773.

The care of Dr. Cohen and his family has been entrusted to David C. Gross Funeral Home in St. Petersburg.
