I am a classmate of Elaine’s from the Beth Israel Hospital SON, Boston. In nursing school our paths crossed just briefly because we were on different rotations for the 3 yrs of school. But even if we were not close classmates, Elaine made an impression wherever she went...she was her own person and not one to be restricted by silly rules, and nursing schools had many silly rules. I was a follower and I followed all the “ rules” so imagine my surprise ( and secret delight) to hear what Elaine had done. Her escapades were many and too many to go into here as we recall her life but I will share a silly rule she broke that was a surprise to me. In the early ‘60’s women had to wear slips and as nursing students it was part of our uniform dress. In those days slips came in white or black and you can guess what color we were to wear! You could be punished for wearing black...about this same time, different colored slips, multi colored and brightly designed psychedelic slips came on the market. No need to guess who had a psychedelic slip! Yup, it was Elaine. And she reveled in wearing it, thumbing her nose at the “rules”. She was even bold enough to reveal it to us in the main cafeteria of the hospital. We hooped and howled at her “hutspar” and she smiled and laughed her Elaine laugh. Judy Rubin Matana

Wonderful memories of a beautiful, caring, compassionate and strong woman. From being neighbors, to car pooling to being moms of cheerleaders, to skipping out of services to get the kids something to eat...to helping with her campaign, to sharing our children simchas and to playing mah Jongg...may her memory be a blessing. Butch, Adam, Amy and Sara...she will always be with you. Much love, Moe and Clare
