Obituary of Leonora Scheiber

Leonora (Lee) Sarah Schechter Scheiber was born in The Bronx, NY on 11/7/1921. Her long and wonderful life concluded in Sarasota, Florida on 3/7/2021.

 

She was predeceased by the love of her life Alan Scheiber, her awesome son Sanders Scheiber, her parents, her three siblings, two nieces and a nephew,  along with dear friend Joseph Kaufman.

 

Leonora is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Paula and John Streeter of St. James City, FL and Wardsboro, VT along with cherished nieces, nephews and great nieces.

 

Leonora was a proud graduate of Hunter College, B.A. 1943 and Early Childhood Teaching Certificate 1945, also accreditation as Religious School teacher with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations in 1967.

 

Leonora lived in Windhoek, Namibia from 1947 to 1952. She resided in Bergenfield, NJ from 1955 until her move to Sarasota in 2013.

 

Leonora was a fabulous devoted wife and mother, as well as a great Hebrew and religious school teacher for over 40 years.

 

She was an active member of Temple Sinai of Bergen County, serving in many capacities and singing in the choir for 45 yrs!

 

Her proudest accomplishment was the founding of the prize winning Temple Sinai Early Childhood Center.

 

Leonora was an inspiration in how she lead her life. She broke norms as a young woman, and always led by example.

 

She loved traveling, learning, reading, being in the natural world and being physically active. Leonora enjoyed cycling, walking, tennis, folk and ballroom dancing as well as Qigong.

 

Her love, wisdom, beauty and sense of humor will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

 

Special appreciation to the amazing staff of Aviva for Senior Living in Sarasota for the phenomenal and loving care they provided for the final eight years of her life as well as her amazing team fromTidewell Hospice who guided us through the final journey with love and compassion.

 

Donations in Leonora's memory can be made to the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston, MA, Tidewell Hospice, the Temple Sinai of Bergen County Music Fund or Aviva for Senior Living in Sarasota.

The care of Mrs. Scheiber and her family has been entrusted to David C. Gross Funeral Home.
