Obituary of Arthur Engelman

Arthur “Artie” Engelman, age 90, passed away Monday November 30, 2020. Born March 17, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY to Max and Julia (Shaul) Engelman. Artie was raised in the Bronx and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from City College of New York and a Masters’ of Science in Meteorology from New York University. Artie enlisted in the Army where he rose to 1st Lieutenant and served in the European Theatre during the Korean War years. 

Artie married his beloved wife Claire Ludlow June 18, 1955. They settled in Framingham Massachusetts in 1958 where they raised three children Robert (Bob), Alan and Eileen. Artie was a geophysicist who worked a few different jobs while living in Massachusetts. At Raytheon he oftentimes spent several weeks in the South Pacific field testing weather balloons and related technologies. The brunt of his career was at the Geophysics Corporation of America (GCA) where he rose to level of Vice President of the technical division. When NASA’s Apollo Program shuttered somewhat abruptly in the mid-70s, GCA segued to pollution detection and control mitigation. Years later when GCA down-sized, Artie again took the advantage of his technical background to rise up the ranks at a computer chip manufacturing company. 

Despite long hours commuting up the Rte. 128 corridor to Bedford, Mass, he never failed to be home by 6 pm to have dinner with the family. Artie relished sports, mainly as a spectator, and Bob, Alan, and Eileen were treated to countless Bruins, Red Sox, and Celtics games in heyday 1960s/70s years through work-share season tickets. Artie was an avid  golfer, and taught both boys the sport, where Bob had a short stint on the high school golf team. Artie also partook in neighborhood father-son softball games that son Alan helped to organize. 

Artie was extremely dedicated to his beloved Claire with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. They loved to travel, visiting Europe many times, Alaska, and the Far East including China. Many of the destinations were linked to their love of cruise ships. They retired in 1997 to St. Pete Beach Florida for warmer weather, and family was always welcomed to visit and spend time on the beach or pool. This also brought them together with close second cousins Joel and Sheila Grossman, with whom the Engelman family shared with their children several Passover meals in Lawrence and North Andover, Mass. After their respective passings, Artie and Claire retained close relations with their Florida relocated children Barbara (Joseph) Sterensis and Jeff (Ellen) Grossman. As Claire and then Artie eventually fell ill, the immediate family became indebted to the Sterensis’ and Grossman’s for their efforts to directly care for Artie and Claire as Bob, Alan, and Eileen lived 1000s of miles away. In 2014 Artie and Claire accordingly moved to the Independent Living wing of the Freedom Square retirement Community in Seminole.

Loving father of Bob and his wife Maria, Alan and his wife Kathy, and Eileen.  

Cherished grandfather of Kelsey, Jason, Alex, Gregory and Max Engelman, Jonathan and Daniel Leary. Great grandfather to Avery Claire Engelman. 

Loving brother to Irwin and his wife Rosalyn Engelman and Paula Weil. 

Also cherished by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, plus extended family members. 

The care of Mr. Engelman and his family has been entrusted to David C. Gross Funeral Home in St. Petersburg.
