Obituary of Sandra Zucker

Sandra "Sandy" Zucker, 87, of Belleair Beach, Florida passed away on November 11, 2019. In an age when women were expected to be good wives and mothers, she was both but also a pioneer in the field of mathematics, computer technology and software engineering. She had a kind and tender heart, remembered by all as a sweet, generous, loving woman who went out of her way to make everyone around her happy.

She graduated from Brooklyn College, the only female mathematician in her class, and went on to attain a masters degree from NYU. She was one of the first computer programmers, starting with one of the very first computers, a room-sized device called UNIVAC-I.  Sandy went on to work for a series of computer companies, including Burroughs, where she was promoted to software manager and headed the team that created the still-in-use SWIFT international banking system. She eventually moved to General Electric Aerospace Division where she was able to work on many, mostly top secret projects for the United States with her husband, Arthur Zucker. Technically "rocket scientists," they remained married for nearly 65 years until Arthur's death in 2017.

At the time of her passing, Sandy was working on her autobiography. This is from the introduction: "I was blessed with a life that included everything good - a great and loving family, interesting work, a loving husband, and wonderful children and grandchildren. There were no great tragedies and I was able to achieve everything I wanted.  If I had my life to live over, I probably would not change a thing." She is survived by her son, Stephen Zucker, her daughter, Miriam "Mickey" Zucker, grandchildren (in order of age): Jacob Moore, Danielle Zucker, Adina Zucker, Koby Moore and Carly Moore as well as a brother, Henry Halpern. She would also want us to mention her dog, Sam.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday November 19 at Sarasota National Cemetery 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, Florida 34241 with Rabbi Ari Shapiro officiating.
