Obituary of Joel Marantz

Dr. Joel Marantz, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully February 23, 2019 at the age of 74. Dr. Marantz was born in New York City in 1944. He moved to Florida with his family at the age of 14 where he lived out the rest of his life. He graduated from Dixie Hollins High School and then from the New England College of Optometry. He began his practice in 1966 in down town St. Petersburg and retired in 2014. His passion for the field of Optometry and staunch support for his colleagues was evident through out his career. He served on and Chaired many professional Boards. He was always willing to provide service and donate his time to the community. His vast knowledge, tireless efforts and generosity caused him to become affectionately known as "The Godfather of Optometry," by those who loved him most. Over his near 50 year career, Dr. Marantz was able to touch and influence thousands of lives. As an avid sports enthusiast, Dr. Marantz was honored to be the first Optometrist for the Tampa Bay Rays, a position that lasted 10 years. His various awards and recognitions for the work in his field are far too many to list. He will leave a lasting legacy for many years to come. Joel will be remembered and missed by his wife, Anne Marantz, children, Brennan and Marissa Hervey, grandchildren, Gage Hervey and Gabriella Sestito, and siblings, Iris Ahl, Allen and Rita Marantz. There will be a private service held in remembrance. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Joel's honor to Menorah Manor or your favorite charity. David C.
