Obituary of Carl Glassberg

Carl L. Glassberg, aged 88, passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at his home in Clearwater, Florida. He is survived by his son Andrew (Barbara Martin), granddaughters Sarah and Emily, and his sister Deborah Oshman. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, friend, and volunteer who will be missed by all who knew him. Carl was born in Manchester, New Hampshire on September 27, 1930. The Glassberg family came from Riga, Latvia in the early 1900s. He attended Central High School where he was valedictorian. He then attended Dartmouth College, where he became Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1951. He then attended the Amos Tuck Business School and received his Master of Business Administration in 1952, focusing on accounting. After graduation, Carl made a momentous visit to his cousin Bubi Mischkinsky in New York City. Bubi and his wife Bella were Holocaust survivors. On that visit, he met Bella’s younger sister, Irene, who also survived the Holocaust. It was love at first sight and they married in 1953, just before Carl headed off to the Korean war. Thus, began a marriage that lasted 61 years, until Irene passed away in 2014. When Carl returned from the war in 1954, he enrolled at Fordham Law School, passing the bar exam in 1957. He also became a CPA that year and joined Peat Marwick Mitchell in New York City. He spent the rest of his career with Peat Marwick, ultimately becoming a partner specializing in taxation. He worked in New York City and Cleveland and, after a distinguished career, retired from the firm in 1983. Carl led a very active life after retirement. He volunteered his time on behalf of Dartmouth College and served on the finance committee of his condo association for many years. He and Irene were active at the Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg, Fl and at the US Holocaust Museum. In 2017, he was honored by Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services for his life time service on behalf of Holocaust survivors. That same year, he was honored by the Tampa Bay Lightning as a Community Hero for his work with survivors. He was active at Temple B’nai Israel in Clearwater, FL. He also loved playing bridge and continued to play three times a week until his death. Services for Carl will be held at David C. Gross Funeral Home in Clearwater, FL on Tuesday, March 5th at 11am. He will be interred at the Cedar Park Cemetery in Paramus, NJ on Tuesday, March 12th, to be rejoined with Irene. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services or the US Holocaust Museum. David C.
