Tilde Hirsch

Obituary of Tilde Hirsch

Tilde Hirsch was known as Oma by everyone. She was born in Germany in 1906, emigrated to Tampa Florida in 1937, and moved to Atlanta in 1987. She died on November 22, 2010 at the age of 104. A graveside service was held on Wed. November 24 at Beth Israel Cemetery in Tampa with Rabbi David Weizman officiating. She married Milian Hirsch in 1931, and they had two children, Johanna and Henry, before leaving Germany. On arriving in the US, fleeing from Hitler, she learned the language, became a citizen, worked at whatever jobs were available to help support the family. As the family became settled and established Tilde worked beside her husband Milian, establishing a kosher butcherie and Temple Beth David synagogue in Tampa. They were married for 53 years when Milian passed away in 1984. Mrs. Hirsch moved to Atlanta in 1987 to be nearer to family. Tilde Hirsch was dedicated to many aspects of the Jewish community, quietly contributing her time and funds to many causes, locally, nationally and in Israel. After moving to Atlanta in 1987, at the age of 80, she volunteered and took classes at Beth Jacob synagogue in Atlanta. She was awarded Outstanding Volunteer of the Year there. She also served on the hevre kadisha in Tampa and Atlanta. "And then there were her Challos. These were an encapsulation of what she was about. They represented her commitment to properly honor the Shabbos. They also were an outlet for her love. She loved sharing those delicious breads with others. Hence, Tanta Tilde was baking Challos every Friday for "everybody" on the block well into her nineties. She, thereby, not only honored the Shabbos herself, but caused others to do so as well." - Allen David, nephew. Mrs. Hirsch leaves children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to carry on her legacy of dedication to Judaism, community service, tzedaka and joy of life. Her children Johanna and Kenneth (deceased) Bromberg, Henry (deceased) and Etta Raye Hirsch; grandchildren, Naomi and Yaneer Bar-Yam (Boston, MA), Efrem Bromberg and Nancy Graham (Exeter, RI), Hillel and Chaya Bromberg (Boston, MA), Lisa and Seth Greenberg (Atlanta) and David and Michele Hirsch (Atlanta); and 13 great grandchildren: Shlomiya, Yavni, Maayan and Taeer Bar-Yam; Jacob and Max Bromberg; Caleb, Liran and Aliza Bromberg; Max and Dori Greenberg; Lewis and Henry Hirsch.
